The whole story in ten short parts, in the simplest words we know. Made to be read by a ten year old, or out loud to a five year old, or by a grandparent catching up. No homework after.
A long time ago, in 1970, a new basketball team started in a snowy city called Buffalo. They were called the Braves. Their best player, Bob McAdoo, was so good at scoring that one year he was named the best player in the whole league.
In 1978 the team moved to San Diego, a sunny city by the ocean. It needed a new name. People there loved the big, fast sailing ships in the bay called clipper ships. So the team became the Clippers. That is really the whole story of the name. Boats.
In 1984 the Clippers moved again, to Los Angeles. But LA already had a famous team, the Lakers, with lots of trophies. The Clippers had none. Being the newer team with no trophies is hard. Remember that part. It matters later.
For a long, long time, the Clippers lost a lot. One season they only won 12 games out of 82. Their best young players kept getting hurt. But here is the amazing thing: some fans loved them anyway, every single year. Those fans are legends now.
In 2011 a superstar named Chris Paul joined Blake Griffin, who could jump over a car. Really, he jumped over a car once. They threw the ball high in the air for slam dunks so often that people called the team Lob City. Suddenly everyone wanted to watch the Clippers.
For over 30 years the team had an owner who did not treat people right. In 2014 he said things so hurtful that the league made him leave forever. A new owner named Steve Ballmer came. He loves the team so much he yells louder than the fans. Things got much better.
The Clippers kept getting good, then losing in painful ways. In 2021 they finally made it further in the playoffs than ever before. They still have never won the championship. Not yet. That word, yet, is the most important word in this whole story.
For 54 years the Clippers always played in someone else's building. Then in 2024 they opened the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, a huge new arena built just for them. There is a giant section called The Wall where only Clippers fans can sit. It gets loud.
Anyone can cheer for a team that already has trophies. It takes something special to cheer for a team still chasing its first one. When the Clippers finally win it, and one day they will, their fans will have the best story in the whole city. You could be part of that story.
Ask the grown-up near you when they became a Clippers fan and what they remember. Then go try the trivia game together. The first questions are easy. We promise.
